TUTORING
WE PROVIDE INTENSIVE INTERVENTION TUTORING FOR CHILDREN WHO STRUGGLE WITH SPELLING, READING, OR WRITING DUE TO DYSLEXIA OR A LEARNING DISABILITY.
Intensive Intervention
Using the Barton Reading & Spelling System we help students who struggle to easily and accurately decode words when reading.
Kindergarten - Adult
Our tutoring can help students as young as kindergarten who are showing signs of struggling. But it can also be used to help older student and even adults.
Time
For best results, we recommend 1 hour of in-person tutoring 2 times per week. To help with cost up to 3 students can be tutored together. (See tuition below)
Who Needs Intensive Intervention?
Children and adults who struggle with reading and spelling.
- They may or may not have been diagnosed with dyslexia
- They range from early elementary school to senior adults
- They range in severity of dyslexia from mild to profound
On average, depending on the severity of dyslexia and how often we meet, clients work with me for one to four years. A minimum of one (60 minute) session a week is allowable, but I encourage two for best results.
Clients are tutored in person 1-2 times a week with the Barton Reading & Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham approach. I am working towards being certified by Susan Barton, the creator of The Barton Reading & Spelling System.
Why we use the Barton Reading & Spelling System.
The Barton Reading and Spelling System that we use was created for students with dyslexia. It’s particularly good for students who have ongoing difficulty with spelling.
An average session lasts about one hour. The tutoring system uses color-coded letter tiles to help students connect sounds with letters. Each lesson has 18 steps, and activities change about every five minutes to keep the student engaged. If a student is unable complete the eight steps within an hour, the lesson continues at the next session.
How many levels are there?
The Barton Reading and Spelling System has 10 levels.
1. Phonemic Awareness
2. Consonants & Short Vowels
3. Closed Syllables and Units
4. Syllable Division & Vowel Teams
5. Prefixes and Suffixes
6. Six Reasons for Silent-E
7. Vowel-R Syllables
8. Advanced Vowel Teams
9. Influences of Foreign Languages
10. Greek Words & Latin Roots
Are the levels the same as grade levels?
No, the level numbers are not the same as grade levels, although after completing all 10 levels a student would be at a 9th grade reading level. At this level there are no more rules to teach, and the student can read anything – even college textbooks.
When tutoring young children, we stop at level 8. With this, we see children go from being a poor reader and speller one year, to being at the top of their class the next year. This is does AMAZING things for a child's confidence and self esteem!
Levels 9 and 10 can be taught to children in the 7th grade and up. At this point they should have enough vocabulary to handle those levels. If not, work on growing their oral vocabulary and delay those last two levels until seventh grade.
Levels 9 and 10 (Influence of Foreign Languages, and Latin Roots and Greek Words) ideally would be taught starting in seventh grade, before a child enters high school.
Those two levels will make certain that the student can read and spell all of the mature words they’ will encounter in high school and college science, history, and math courses.
